You’re enjoying your day off, lounging around in your living room, when a loud noise startles you.

As a series of hammering noises begins, you become hyper aware of the noises around your unit, from the children playing excitedly in the corridor, to the neighbour’s new puppy barking, to the clanging of pots as the elderly auntie next door starts to prepare dinner.

You may be tempted to crank up the volume of the TV in retaliation or march out to give everyone a piece of your mind.

Yet, the reality of urban living is that we need to give and take in equal measure to live in harmony with our neighbours.

This July, the Singapore Kindness Movement presents a new campaign entitled “Neighbours”, which will speak to the heart of the quintessential heartlander. While acknowledging the stress that can be sparked by a lack of consideration shown by others living nearby, the campaign also offers an alternative perspective of seeking friendship among neighbours.

Through the first-hand viewpoint of a young teacher, Peggy, who is annoyed by the noise nuisances created by her neighbours, the spot reaches a surprising conclusion when she decides to confront them about their actions.

In line with SKM’s campaign theme of “A Nation of Kindness Starts with One”, Neighbours shows that by taking the first step to get to know your neighbours, their struggles, and their aspirations, building neighbourly friendships rooted in empathy and consideration becomes less of a challenge and more of a matter of natural occurrence.

You can watch Neighbours on SKM’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/KindnessSG.
